Goal Setting is old fashioned compared to this new solution to organize life.
After many years I realized goal setting means organizing goals.
Think about this.
- If you've read about goal setting before, has it ever been defined for you?
- How would YOU define goal setting?
My short definition is: to organize goals.
Goals are: Things we want. Right?
Goal Setting became learning how to organize life, organize time, and organize now, etc.
Conscious Goals vs Conflicting Subconscious Goals
I further realized that we already have a ton of goals.
Every habit is a goal. Every choice (including bad ones and ones that waste our time/money/etc) depends on some kind of goal from our inner mind.
The many goals we already have come from our deepest convictions, hang-ups, beliefs, and perspectives.
To really organize goals we have to be conscious of all of them, and we have to understand the ways in which they conflict with each other.
When you understand this article you will take goal setting to a concsious level and organize goals more thoroughly.
Under that summer warmth, by writing all these ideas down, I discovered 3 levels of how to organize goals which will give you very deep control of organizing your life for what you want to get out of it.
So here they are..
Organize Goal Setting Level 1
Identify all the things that naturally pull your attention, that attract you towards them in some way, including things that you do not want to consider as 'chosen goals' such as 'watching the game ', computer games, TV infomercial channels, time at the pub, etc.
You need to be brutally honest with yourself by actually writing all this down. By committing things to paper, magic will happen. If you are skeptical, try it.
If you do not try it, remember that I hereby tell you that not writing things down on paper is probably one of your biggest causes of failure.
And if you are not in the habit of writing things down. I bet that you are failing in many areas of life.
Now, this list of 'attractive' things, those things that pull at your time and attention, are all goals.
They are your subconscious, habitual, goals.
Organize Goals Consciously by writing them all down on paper.
Warning: When many people list their goals, it is a wish list of things they would love to have but generally think are a long shot. They don't really have confident positive expectation of them coming true. This sabotages the minds function of achieving and learning to genuinely organize goals.
A mixture is needed. Some goals that seem a bit pie in the sky right now, and other goals that seem highly doable.
So...
Organize Goal Setting Level 2
Ultimately, to organize goals, means to manage projects.
That is what goals should really be about, i.e. organizing projects and next step actions for each project, and then scheduling those next step actions. This is the only way to organize goals to achieve them.
- Create a large list of all the things you would love to do, have, be, and get done in your life, now and any time in the future.
- Take each item on that list, one by one, and add the detail of what would need to exist and what would need to be done, for each project.
I will keep this brief, but the last two points are very important. To organize goals you must create each one as a project and identify the next step actions for each goal/project, and be absolutely sure to write it all down on paper or type it on computer.
E.g. A goal such as 'get a promotion at work' will sink into nothing unless you identify the sorts of things, the steps that you can take, to move closer and closer to that possibility.
Are you now ready to achieve those goals you have organized?
Progress to...
Organize Goal Setting Level 3
You now need to develop the willingness to act on those next step actions you identified in organize goals level 2.
Setting short term commitments to stay mindful of what is on your goals lists, and then scheduling the next step actions, will allow you to achieve your goals.
Again, it's a topic that some people cringe at until they experience the effects of the organize goals levels 1 and 2 first.
You can not put time commitments on goals with confidence and satisfaction unless organize goals by first identifying the individual little steps that you would need to take.
Using 'to do lists' are vital to organize goals, and once you have achieved organize goals levels 1 and 2 you will enjoy using to-do lists more than ever before. And what's more is that they will finally work well for you.
Simply take your next step activities from organize goals level 2 and select some of those next steps to make a to-do list.
Based on this article can you now organize goals better than before?
You and I know the countless people that attend personal development seminars to get excited and do some goal setting, but without the structure to organize goals as in this article, 80% of their good intentions become forgotten intentions and niggling frustrations.
